Where is Guam, anyway?

So, I have a lot of stories to tell…but my first will be a current event.

I have tragic news…my macbook pro is ill.  I came home from dinner tonight to find its screen black as night and unresponsive.  I tried the normal remedies, such as turning it off and back on multiple times, unplugging the power source, taking the battery out and so forth and so on.

After much stress, I decided to turn on my desktop (thank goodness for old PCs that you refuse to let go) and try to figure it out online.  I did all the things the apple website told me to do, which included many of the procedures I had already done in an attempt to save my beloved laptop, but it was all for naught.  Nothing would make the screen respond to my desperate pleas.

I decided, then, to attempt to phone in to the apple support hotline.  I had assumed I would have 24/7 help from these people, and I was sadly mistaken.  I called several different US phone numbers only to be told that they closed at 6:00 PM and would not reopen until tomorrow morning.  That simply wouldn’t fly…I needed my computer far sooner than that!

My solace came in the form of a 1-800 number to Guam.  Are all 1-800 numbers free?  Difficult to say…I guess we’ll have to wait and see when my phone bill comes in at the end of the month.  Either way…I spoke with my friend Amelia on the phone about it and she said that she thought it would be free so I decided I’d give it a shot.

I called the number and spoke to a man, at first, who I could hardly understand.  I attempted to tell him what was wrong, and that I was not, in fact, from Guam…but the United States and that no one here was awake to help me in my time of dire need.  He then told me he was going to put me through to someone who could possibly fix my problem.

Then it happened.  I was connected after much impatience to an English man.  I should probably say…that those with an English accent are like my kryptonite.  He started talking, and I think he told me his name, although I can’t be sure because by the time I realized he was British it was too late and I was too far gone to even know what he was saying.  He walked me through the same series of tasks I had already attempted in an effort to salvage my poor computer, but to no avail.

In the end, I was told to take my computer to a “certified apple store” to get it fixed.  Although this news is utterly tragic to me, as it means I will be using my vastly inefficient desktop in the meantime, I still am thrilled by the fact that I got to spend a good 15-20 minutes on the phone with a fabulous British guy…even if he didn’t fix my computer.  By the time the kryptonite wears off, which will likely be tomorrow morning, I will be annoyed with him for not being able to fix it…but for now, I’m as happy as I can be.  We’ll see about tomorrow when it gets here.
